A Crown of Stars
At close of day all colours fade
But the orange pink of the sunset.
I made jewels from her evening light.
When that angle of the dipping light
Makes coruscating silver of the oceans,
I took the precious silver from the sea,
And forged a crown with jewels of the sunset.
I fixed it with the morning and the evening star,
The very stars I stole from heaven.
The curlews and the swans gave me
The emeralds of their lakeside,
And I wove them in a cloth of silk.
Your crown is only daisies
Crowned with blue forget-me-nots,
No precious stones we have
Nor silver for the smith,
You cradle only lilies in your arms,
The dewy grass and earth the carpet
Of your royal progress,
Still in the dreams we share
Lying in the sapphire of the night,
You are the queen with jewels
Braided in your hair, and I your servant
Who brings these gifts to you.
